EITHER the independent councillor for Osbaldwick and Derwent is living in cloud cuckoo land or he is not aware of the full facts.

He states that there is no housing crisis in the York or indeed the wider UK.

He also states that he had questioned an independent population expert who said that any perceived York housing shortage was created by “inward migration”.

He continues to state in the same letter that “there is however a demand problem caused largely by successive government failures to put an end to uncontrolled mass immigration into the UK, a policy deliberately initiated by the Tony Blair government”.

I went to my local library and read the full report and the reference to migration only refers to “inward migration” and actually refers to people from other parts of the UK, in the country legally, to seek employment.

Maybe Cllr Mark Warters could attempt to explain it to the thousands of people who are sleeping rough on the streets and the many more thousands forced into living in bed and breakfast accommodation with young children, and the many more thousands sofa surfing with family or friends.

The answer to Cllr Warters’ alleged non-problem is for more affordable rented as well as private accommodation of a sufficient standard to be made available.

This would provide safe and secure roofs over people’s heads, which surely is everybody’s human right.
