TICKET prices for the pop-up Shakespearean theatre coming to York next year will start from £12.50 for adults, it has been revealed.

Lunchbox Theatrical Productions want to construct the 900 seater theatre on Castle car park from June to September next year, and next week senior councillors will be asked to grant permission for the land’s temporary use.

Ahead of that meeting, a council report reveals that adult tickets will start from £12.50.

The report also reveals Lunchbox will pay the council around £1,600 a day for the use of just under half the car park. The exact rate varies over the season, but in total the council is in line for £197,000.

The report adds: “The theatre will create an additional spend in York’s economy, estimated to be close to £7 million, as well as additional employment.”

The paper also shows that council staff think the theatre would bring vibrancy to the area, and that any lost car parking spaces could be made up for elsewhere - including in the Piccadilly car park which could see its opening times extended.

There is a “small risk” of the council losing £40,000 in parking revenue, it adds, but that likely be offset by drivers heading to other council car parks instead.
