A CHILDREN'S TV show has been filming in York.

Degree students at York College featured on the CBBC programme Marrying Mum and Dad after a film crew descended on the media make-up studio to watch students working on witch and wizard designs.

Students studying the Foundation Degree in media make-up, special effects make-up and hair design demonstrated their creativity when programme makers asked them to work on make-up disguises for the mother and girlfriend of characters Harry (aged 11) and Lily (aged 9) in advance of their surprise wedding.

Students produced a selection of witch and wizard designs so the children could choose their favourites. After showing the children how to administer prosthetics, make-up and beards, a few weeks later students reproduced the designs for the actual wedding day, on location in Bradford.

Foundation Degree student, Rachel Pedlingham said: “I was delighted my designs were used for such a popular children’s television programme. Exploring the theme of witches and wizards with the children was great fun, they were fascinated to see how make-up, hair design and prosthetics can bring nice and nasty characters to life. Being part of the filming process was interesting and I am pleased to be able to add this to my work experience. After my Foundation Degree I am going onto the BA (Hons) in Media Makeup and Hair design at York College furthering my skill sets ready to work in television and film."

Media make-up tutor, Sharon Pickup said: “Working on a live television project and film shoot provided students with real industry experience. Their designs came across well and they coped brilliantly with the demands of the film crew. Everyone enjoyed the buzz of the wedding too, which made it extra special.”

Programme Producer Amanda Pollock says: “We are so grateful to the York College students for their expertise in making the children’s wishes come true, they so wanted to arrange a witches and wizards wedding and the students creativity made it possible. The students worked well with the family and the film crew, culminating in a fabulous wedding day for Harry and Lily’s parents.”
