FROM Argentina to York, via North America, Asia, Australia and Africa - a South American family who have been on the road for 17 years made it to York this week.

The Zapp family - Herman and Candelaria, and children Pampa, Tehue, Paloma and Wallaby - have travelled the world for more than a decade, in their 90 year old Graham-Paige car - relying on the accommodation of strangers.

Last week, the family arrived in York to stay with Florencia Clifford - who owns the Partisan cafe in Micklegate - and her family, at their farm in Scrayingham.

Florencia said: “I am originally from Argentina, and I have some Argentinian friends who are studying in York. They told me the Zapps were coming, and asked if they could offer them my car parking space.”

Candelaria said they arrived to good weather, and had enjoyed walking around the city and photographing their eye-catching vehicle at landmarks like Clifford’s Tower and the Bar Walls, while her children were looking forward to a trip to the NRM.

The Zapps have stayed with British families throughout their month in the UK - before they head north to Scotland then cross to Ireland - and Herman said the British were “huge travellers”, and they have stayed with people they met in India, South Africa, and on a journey up the Amazon.

Social media has also helped, as people have offered accommodation in return for tips about travelling with a family, and Herman encouraged readers to follow their dream, as they have followed their dream of travelling.

Herman said their travelling style had led to a completely unique experience.

He said: "We wouldn’t have been 17 years on the road if we had been travelling by ourselves. Being in a family home feels like being among family and friends.

"We are just regular people, living in an incredible world with incredible people. The journey is not about where we are, but who we are with."
