GEOFF ROBB (Letters, July 20) is perfectly right, the current ECB fixture list is completely unbalanced and does not encourage people to invest in county cricket club membership.

Today’s directors of cricket, coaches regularly complain of an overcrowded fixture list resulting in players suffering from fatigue.

Upon analysis this is absolute bunkum. To support my point, I suggest they refer to Wisden (cricket’s almanac) 1975 ad peruse Yorkshire’s commitments for that season.

Starting in April and concluding in September, they played 22 three-day county fixtures, Gillette Cup matches plus participated in the John Player Sunday League.

Nobody complained then, players enjoyed it as did spectators. Everybody accepted the challenge.

Is it not time for today’s mollycoddled, supposedly fitter, players to do the same and for coaches to stop making silly excuses?
