A NEW scheme has been launched by North Yorkshire Police to tackle long-term problems in a seaside town.

Operation Culture began this week in Scarborough, following complaints from the community about antisocial behaviour, street drinking, visible use of illegal substances and public urination and defecation in the town.

The local Neighbourhood Police Team and Scarborough Borough Council will issue Public Space Protection Orders (PSPOs), to offenders, and more officers will be on the streets during the 10-week operation.

Acting Police Sergeant Mike Tinsley said: "We encourage the public to stop and speak with officers in the town, who will be more than happy to tell them about the operation.

"We hope this operation will demonstrate the commitment of North Yorkshire Police and our community partners in tackling perpetrators of inconsiderate and unlawful behaviour that blights the enjoyment of the town for residents and visitors alike."

The force will also work with charities Changing Lives and Horizons, which work with vulnerable people and those with drug and alcohol dependencies.

To report suspicious people or activity, phone North Yorkshire Police on 101, 999 in an emergency, or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
