B NORRIS advocated flyovers and underpasses for the A1237, and also at Hopgrove (Letters, August 14).

The A1237 is the responsibility of City of York Council, who have only enough money to maintain the existing road.

Hopgrove is managed by Highways England, as part of the A64 strategic trunk road.

York is wholly dependant on external Whitehall grants to make any significant changes to the A1237 and we are a long way down their queue.

There is also the matter of acquiring additional land, much of which is privately owned.

And if the A1237 ever becomes a driver’s utopia, how long would it remain so?

The lessons of history teach us that there would be a massive unleashing of suppressed demand, fuelled by more business and housing development.

The inevitable result would be bigger jams tomorrow, instead of “jam tomorrow”.
