I READ with interest about the imaginative plans to tackle growing flood risk by introducing new approaches to land management to slow the flow of the Foss before it reaches York (“21st Century solution to Foss flooding risk”, The Press, August 16).
Up to last June’s EU referendum, this would have been a pipe dream as farmers in the proposed areas would still be working under the yoke of the EU’s inflexible Common Agricultural Policy.
However, in the years to come, we will be resuming control of our own farming and land use policies.
In carefully selected areas, these must include long term incentives for farmers to manage their land for local flood resilience that will bring multiple benefits for us all.
