According to the Yorkshire Herald Lobby Correspondent, Mr Baldwin would be back in London from Ottawa before the end of the week.

He may spend a few days in town if there was a Cabinet meeting early in the week or talk with the Prime Minister.

Proprietors of the Compton Court Hotel at Cawood, were all set to turn the village into a miniature inland resort.

Their intent was to build a terraced pleasure garden at the back of their hotel which over-looked the River Ouse, with a motor boat hire service weekends, with trips up the river at 10s.

Already the Archers had four motor boats in action for hiring, and were doing a roaring trade.

That was the record of Tadcaster brewery’s oldest delivery driver, Mr William Dyson who had retired after 50 years on the same round.

An official of John Smith’s Brewery Company said: “It was an amazing record and never likely to be equalled because we don’t take drivers now until they are at least 20.”

The Government urged the remaining 5,000 people still on the Caribbean island of Monserrat to flee following further volcanic eruptions.

The volcano had become much more dangerous over the last 24 hours and the Government was sending the frigate HMS Liverpool and ferries to evacuate anyone who wanted to leave.

Hundreds of budding actors rolled up in York hoping for a part in a Hollywood costume drama starring Eric Cantona.

More than 300 extras were needed for the Minster scenes for the film Elizabeth I, where Cantona swapped his trademark football shirt for a period costume of doublet and hose.
