A PICTURESQUE agricultural show which was first staged in 1871 will take place on Saturday.

The annual Rosedale Show will be held on the Milburn Arms Field at Rosedale Abbey, and will be open from 9am.

Alongside staples of the show such as livestock classes, showjumping, produce, vintage tractors and sculptures, there will be fox hound and terrier shows, gundogs, terrier races, gymkhana, and music from the Malton White Star brass band and the popular Railroad Hobos.

Sam Dring, the show’s chairman who has also taken on the role of secretary this year, said entries are looking strong.

“We’re up on sheep,” she said. “Other entries are looking good too - we’re pleased with how the show is being supported this year.”

New events this year include a mountain and moorland ridden class. “The mountain and moorland classes are very popular at the moment," Ms Dring said, “and the in-hand ones are very well supported too.”

She added that the entries include a lot of new names from far afield. “That’s always good,” she said. “We’re very appreciative of that.”

Entries are coming from as far away as Devon, as well as Goole, Driffield and Yarm.

Refreshments will be available on the showfield and in the village.

There is a free car park and also limited ringside parking, including for wheelchair users available, though this must be booked in advance.

There are no mobile homes or caravans allowed on the field.

Admission is £5 for adults, £4 for senior citizens, £3 for children, with under fives going free.

The organisation of this year’s show has been a bumpy ride. When the former secretary left earlier this year, Ms Dring took on the role herself, despite working full-time. “It’s just one of those things, we’ve all had to step up,” she said. “The committee has done well and we have a lot of support.”

Due to the vacancy, the show is currently advertising for a new secretary. The position, which comes with an honorarium, would involve organisation of future shows as part of a busy team.
