THE founder of Terry’s of York is set to be honoured with a commemorative plaque in York.
Joseph Terry, a confectioner and chocolatier, was born in 1793 and died in 1850.
The blue plaque will be revealed on Thursday at 3pm by York Civic Trust at 3-5 St Helen’s Square, where Joseph had his first factory and shop.
In addition, a plaque will be unveiled by the Trust in memory of Samuel Tuke, a Quaker and social campaigner, on August 24 at 11am. Born in 1784 and died in 1857, he was also a pioneer in the treatment of mental health. The unveiling ceremony will take place at Tuke House, in Lawrence Street. A commemorative plaque to Joseph Aloysius Hansom, an architect and designer of the Hansom Cab, will also be unveiled by the Trust at 114 Micklegate, on August 30, at 11am. Meanwhile, the Trust, in partnership with York Business Improvement District, have been re-painting several street signs in the city centre including Whip-Ma-Wop-Ma-Gate, Little Shambles, King’s Court and Church Street.
