85 years ago

York entered enthusiastically into the spirit of the carnival, starting with an annual street procession organised by the York Sportsmen’s Hospital Fund.

Thousands of citizens and visitors watched the procession slowly wend its way through the streets, coming to a halt late in the afternoon at Lumley barracks, where prizes were presented by the Lady Mayoress Mrs J B Morrell.

In the evening the fun continued with a “Mystery Rag,” organised by workers from LNER Carriage and Wagon Works.

Motor hold-ups were held on Blossom-street, by fearsome energetic bandits who made a great haul from motorists en route for the East Coast.

A flannel dance was held in the Memorial Hall, Kirkbymoorside and the monthly meeting of the North Froddingham Women’s Institute commenced with a programme of songs, recitations and monologues.

50 years ago

Members of Osbaldwick parish council were given some shock news about their picturesque village green after members were told that York corporation wanted to dig it up to lay a nine-inch sewer and six-inch rising main, in connection with the new abattoir at Murton and West Yorkshire Road Car Co Ltd wanted to run buses through the middle of the village in a circular route.

Hairdressing through the ages was the theme of the show for Bootham's Society Club opening night after a fortnight’s summer recess.

Eleven models from Andre Bernard hairdressing salon, Blake Street, York, paraded before wine-and-diners at the club wearing hairpieces and costumes showing styles from Elizabethan times to mini-skirts.

And champion angler Eddie Gowland and his two-year-old Alsatian “Rip” battled against the strong Ouse currents for over an hour to land the best catch of the day, a rowing boat.

The results of their labour was now securely moored to river bank.

20 years ago

Public health chiefs in North Yorkshire issued two warnings after discovering poisonous algae in a river, and a giant jellyfish off Scarborough.

Danger notices had been posted along the banks of the River Wharfe at Tadcaster, warning adults and children not to cool off by swimming in the polluted river in the current hot spell.

A multi-million pound bid to transform a troubled housing estate was being drawn up by the City of York Council.

Sports and recreational facilities and possibly even a new sports centre were all part of the proposals to regenerate Kingsway North.
