DRIVERS have been urged to avoid a main road into York, following a crash between a bus and a car.

North Yorkshire Police said the crash happened close to York College in Tadcaster Road at about 3.45pm, on the route into the city.

A spokesman said the green and silver bus had been badly damaged in the crash, and there had been reports of smoke coming from the car, which was a black Volvo V40.

He said officers at the scene had reported "walking wounded", but it was not immediately clear how serious the injuries were.

The spokesman advised motorists to avoid the area, as heavy traffic had built up as far back as the A64.

Both vehicles were due to be recovered, but the spokesman could not give a timescale.
