A MAN from Selby has today pleaded guilty to making offensive and threatening posts on social media.
Lee Carver, 44, of Greenacres Crescent pleaded guilty, at York Crown Court, to three counts under the Public Order Act, publishing or distributing material which is threatening, abusive or insulting, intending thereby to stir up racial hatred.
Carver was arrested on November 27, 2016 following a report by a member of the public who was concerned regarding social media postings. The information led to an investigation by the North East Counter Terrorism Unit and Carver's subsequent arrest and charge.
Detective Chief Superintendent Clive Wain, head of the North East CTU, said “Posts like these have the power to influence many vulnerable people and stir up racial hatred.
"As this case shows, it is vital that the public report concerning online material. By bringing such postings and websites to the attention of police we can work together with our partners to identify those responsible and put them before the courts.
“Anyone who has concerns regarding online content can report the material anonymously via www.gov.uk/ACT or call the police in confidence on 0800 789 321."
