Boroughbridge High School student Brandon Trower was due to leap on to the nation's television screens this weekend.

The teenager is to appear on Sky Sports while competing in the long jump in the Sainsbury English Schools' athletics event in Birmingham representing the Boroughbridge area.

Initially disbelieving about the call-up, Brandon, aged 14, has been training for two years at school and will get a chance to shine in front of the television cameras.

He said: "I am hoping to do my best. I know I will be competing against people older than me and I don't know the competition. My family are really pleased for me and will be there watching me."

The student was inspired by the PE staff at Boroughbridge HS and pointed out Miss Godsll-Wright as a particular inspiration, explaining: "She has always been there to help me and teach about athletics."

London's Olympic Games in five years time remains his main goal.

The youngster, who has also represented the North Yorkshire and Harrogate/Craven football teams, enthused: "My dream is to represent Great Britain in 2012. If I keep practising both my long jump and my 100 metres then you never know."
