Thousands of Greta Garbo fans had waited patiently to greet the arrival of the steamer Gripsholm at Gothenburg, in which famous film star had used to travel back to her native land.

Escorted by seven policemen Greta was met by loud cheers from admirers as she came ashore, only to then make a quick exit via a motor car, leaving her fans stood gaping only managing to catch a fleeting glimpse.

Speaking to journalists later she said “she had never seen anything like it before”.

No, I will tell you nothing of my plans,” she repeated time and time again.

“Shall I return to Hollywood? I cannot say.”

York City Football Club now had a total of 20 signed players after signing Stephen Spargo, from Doncaster Rovers.

50 years ago

A new £150,000 Rowntree plant in York, was hoped to be up and running by 1998.

The new production centre for the milk crumb, the basic ingredient of milk chocolate was to also include a milk reception, storage facilities, pasteurisation, vacuum evaporation, drying plant and dried crumb handling equipment capable to deal with an additional 9,000 gallons of full cream a day.

Easingwold’s new £25,000 courthouse had come into use for the first time, a vastly different setting from the rented ballroom at the town hall where the just justices had sat for many years.

Magistrates would no longer have to sit under Christmas streamers and decorated mirrors from the weekend dances.

Police, press and witnesses would no longer have to retire behind the bar for a cigarette during adjournments.

20 years ago

Investigations were under way after an outbreak of diarrhoea at Malton Bacon Factory.

Thirteen workers were laid low by the bug, but production at the factory had continued unaffected.

Factory chiefs said the outbreak was not connected with meat production but all members of staff would not be allowed back to work without a doctor’s certificate giving them the all clear.

Diana, Princess of Wales, was off on the second day of her visit to war-ravaged Bosnia.

The Princess who seemed to be at ease, showed no sign of concern at the headlines about her relationship with millionaire playboy Dodi Fayed.
