A DRIVER of a car that overturned in a crash near York this morning was arrested on suspicion of drink and drug driving.

A passenger in the car was trapped following the collision in Barley Rise, Strensall, and had to be released by a fire crew.

North Yorkshire Police was called to reports of "a three vehicle collision", just before 3.30am, a spokeswoman for the force said.

She added: "One of the cars ended upon its roof.

"The 23-year-old female driver was taken to hospital with non serious injuries and she was later released from hospital and subsequently arrested on suspicion of drug driving. She remains in police custody."

Police, firefighters and ambulance crews were all called to the crash.

Firefighters freed the trapped passenger using airbags, lighting and hydraulic cutting gear.

Traffic Constable Mark Patterson, of North Yorkshire Police's Roads Policing Group, wrote on Twitter: "RTC this morning in #Strensall. Driver arrested after positive tests for cocaine & alcohol. Passenger trapped, rescued by @NorthYorksFire.

"Blood sample obtained from driver for analysis. Injuries to passenger not thought to be serious."

A spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said two people were taken to York Hospital, including a woman in her 20s, who suffered an arm injury.

Two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.
