Review: Great Yorkshire Fringe, The Scarecrow's Wedding, White Rose Rotunda, Parliament Street, York.

ENTERING the White Rose Rotunda to birdsong and a simple-yet-effective green pasture hillside stage, it's clear the kids are going to enter the world of the much-loved book.

The award-winning team from Scamp Theatre, who previously brought Stick Man - also the creation of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler - to life use every inch of the stage (and a little bit more), bringing wonderful songs to the fore and cheery smiles to the crowd.

Cast Joanna Brown, Sam Heron and Mark Kane are clearly enjoying themselves, and switch between musical instruments and - in Kane's case - supporting characters with ease.

For the adults, there are subtle nods to The Archers, Frozen, and Kane's Reginald The Rakish Rake - a stereotypical French love rival to Heron's Harry, keen for Brown's Betty - and the show is both simple and short enough to keep three-year-olds interested, and entertaining enough to keep adults smiling too.

Twice daily (except today Monday 31), until August 6. Tickets at greatyorkshirefringe.com or 01904 500600.
