POLICE were waiting as a two-time drink driver pulled up at his home address, York magistrates heard.

They had tracked Cihan Atkas' journey through the city after a tip-off that he was drink driving.

said Cathy Turnbull, prosecuting.

He was twice the drink drive limit and it was the second time he had drunk and driven. In January 2010, he was banned from driving for 17 months.

Atkas, who represented himself, said he had only drunk a single glass of vodka moments before he got into the car and had only driven briefly from the place where he worked to his home address.

Atkas, 30, of Burns Court, York, pleaded guilty to drink driving and was banned from driving for three years.

Magistrates refused him the chance to reduce his driving ban by going on a drink rehabilitation course, as he had been on one in 2010, and they only allow motorists to reduce their ban once.

Atkas was also fined £400 with £85 prosecution costs and a £40 victim surcharge.

Ms Turnbull said police got a tip off at 2am on July 9 that a man was drink driving in a black Alfa Romeo. They tracked the car by camera and at 4.30am it drove into Burns Court. Atkas told officers he had had a beer after work.

Atkas denied driving between 2am and 4am, saying he had been at work until then. He said he had had an argument with a work colleague.

During the dispute, he had drunk a single glass of vodka.

“I didn’t feel anything,” he said. “It takes five or six minutes to get into the system.”

He had then immediately got into the car and drove.
