'AMAZING' GP Dr Elizabeth Nellist has been nominated by a patient who said she saved her life.

Sarah Leighton, saw Dr Nellist at Petergate Surgery in Clifton Moor, and got in touch to nominate the doctor for a Health Hero accolade in our Community Pride awards.

Ms Leighton said: "Dr Nellist was amazing. She gave me immediate medical treatment to help in the short term. She also helped me set up therapies to address my problems in the long term.

"In a very dark moment of my life where I couldn't see a way out or a future Dr. Nellist went above and beyond to help me see that there were options and people to help me.

"I am so lucky to have met Dr. Nellist that day. She saved me and gave me my life back. I have seen many doctors over the years but no-one like Dr. Nellist. She is definitely a health service hero.

After hearing about her nomination, Dr Nellist, who qualified in Birmingham in 2004 said: "I'm so incredibly touched to be nominated for this. At a time when general practice is under such pressure, to make a positive difference to a patient is what makes it so special and rewarding."

l The Community Pride Awards are run by The Press with City of York Council and the primary sponsor is York-based healthcare organisation Benenden. Nominees must live in, or contribute to life in the City of York Council area.

Finalists will be announced in The Press next month and they will be invited to an awards ceremony at York Racecourse in October.
