ONE of the wacky soapbox carts due to race down the cobbles in the Micklegate Run on Bank Holiday Monday has been unveiled and test driven.

Pupils at Scarcroft Primary School let their imagination go and designed a rainbow pooping tortoise cart that will be chased down the steep street by runners dressed as hares.

The winning design concept was by pupils Jasmine Hirst, Evie Sexton, Jennifer Wilson, Grace Vanner and Emily Marques.

Jasmine said her design combined the fact that unicorns poop rainbows, but she likes tortoises and turtles.

The winning theme was chosen by a panel of judges, including parents responsible for building the cart, and the team’s sponsors Martin Harman and Adele Procter of Your Bike Shed cycle café and workshop in Micklegate.

Mr Harman said: "It is such a pleasure to see how much enthusiasm the children have for this whole event and the pleasure it brings to everyone involved at the school.

"The ideas they came up with for the design made it a very difficult competition to judge".

All the children’s designs have been put on display in the cellar café at Your Bike Shed.

During a test drive children from each class took turns to ride in the soapbox cart for a donation to RSPCA, the school's chosen charity it will collect for during the race.

Deputy headteacher Jenny Holton said “The soapbox challenge is a wonderful event, which allows the children to be creative and imaginative in their designs.

"They love seeing them come to life and we are pleased to be able to raise money for our chosen charity.”

The Autohorn Micklegate Run Soapbox Challenge will be launched by Shane Lynch from Boyzone, who will also be competing with the Snappy Charity.

The event from 10am until 6pm on Monday, August 28 will see 50 soapbox carts hurtling down the cobbles for charity, a supercar line-up, a funfair on Ouse Bridge and a food court. It is a free event and two huge screens will catch the action on the day.

There will be an opportunity to preview the carts at York Racecourse on Sunday, August 15 from 1-4pm.
