PLANS are afoot to set up a new community group in Clifton to celebrate the area's rich history.

Kay Watkins, a member of Clifton Residents Association, and one her neighbour Hatti McKenzie want to form a new group to remember the ordinary people who have lived and worked in Clifton.

The pair, both of Shipton Street, Clifton, are also hoping to organise a street party for the Shipton Street area next year, where residents can tell their stories about the history of the area.

An event, called 'Smartie Party' will be held on August 4 to launch the group, and to get residents in the Shipton Street area interested in being part of organising the street party.

Kay, 65, says residents who would like to join the group or meet other local people are invited to the event, at St Luke's Church Hall, in Shipton Street, to share their stories, photographs and memories of life in Clifton.

She said: "We were inspired by the Jo Cox memorial call for the 'great get together' that encourages communities to come together and combat isolation.

"Clifton has in the past had a strong sense of community with people employed at Rowntree's and supported many small businesses and trades.

"We want residents to come together with their stories, pictures, memories of life around the area, particularly as Shipton Street school is well remembered by many local people.

"The possibilities are exciting - starting a heritage group to celebrate the area's history, planning a street party for next year, developing a sense of belonging to a special community."

Residents can bring along their stories and photographs to the event on August 4. It will take place from 10.30am and noon, and also from 7pm to 9pm.
