Ed Byrne, Spoiler Alert!, Selby Abbey, Selby Arts Festival

DO read on. Spoiler Alert! is the title of Irish comic Ed Byrne's new show, which was getting a good airing under the magnificent arches of Selby's abbey.

It was a run-through before his month-long stint at the Edinburgh Fringe, and although Byrne came on with some sheets of paper, they were not necessary. He was polished, energetic and confident, cantering across the stage, while periodically running his hand through his floppy hair.

How spoilt we all are was the theme of the show. Much of the focus was on his two kids and how they don't appreciate what they have (a giant trampoline, fancy pastas for tea and visits to see the "real" Santa in Lapland). Byrne is a hillwalker and the spoiling of the great outdoors is tackled too (like the eejit who tried to drive his 4X4 up Snowdon). It was a sell-out show, but it didn't feel like that in the cavernous setting. "I've never had a sold-out gig that felt so empty in all my life," declared Byrne, before hitting us with a great joke about Love Island: "I watched one episode and now my TV has chlamydia!". After 60-minutes, Byrne surprised the crowd, and even himself, by coming back for an encore. It was worth it: a hilarious routine about visiting the doctor to get a vasectomy.

New mum Tania Edwards was the warm-up act and won over the settling crowd with her dead-pan delivery and tales from the domestic front line.
