ALDI is a step closer to opening its third store in York and is now recruiting for 20 new staff.

The discount supermarket giant is building a brand new store on Water Lane, on the former Clifton Grain silos site. It is due to open later this year, and bosses are now looking for a deputy store manger as well as 20 assistants and apprentices for both the new shop and the two existing Aldi branches in York.

Sandy Mitchell, Aldi regional managing director, said: “Aldi continues to be incredibly popular with shoppers in York, and to cope with this demand, we’re looking forward to opening our third store in the city.

“We have a number of opportunities for people throughout the local community, and would encourage anyone interested in a career at Aldi to apply via our recruitment website.”

She added: “We are looking to attract applicants from a diverse range of backgrounds who can demonstrate relevant experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.”

The supermarket has been crowned Employer of the Year 2017 at the Grocer Gold awards.

The Water Lane site was once part of a wartime RAF base and home to Halifax bombers, and the hangars were later used to store part of the “grain mountain” until it was sold by the Rural Payments Agency in 2004.

Planning permission was then given for a housing development on a large part of the site, but a legal battle over affordable housing meant building did not start until 2015. Aldi announced its plan for the site in 2015.
