THOUSANDS of competitors took part in a two-day triathlon at Castle Howard at the weekend.

A strong field of 2,300 people competed in a swim in Castle Howard’s Great Lake and a challenging bike and run through the Howardian Hills.

Among the 500 junior triathletes was Bailey Matthews, who has cerebral palsy. He returned to Castle Howard for the third year, to complete the course un-aided for the first time. “I really enjoyed the bike, it’s tough but you have got to get out of your comfort zone to see what you can do," he said.

First over the line for the men was Sam Wade in two hours, 10 minutes and 59 seconds. For the women, Catherine Jameson flew around the course in two hours, 30 minutes and two seconds.

Registration is now open for 2018 event, which will take place on June 23 and 24. To sign up, go to castletriathlonseries.co.uk
