THE coat of arms crest at York Mansion House has had a fresh coat of paint to mark the countdown to the completion of the house’s £2.6 million restoration this autumn.

Councillor Keith Aspden said: “I am tremendously excited to see York Mansion House in preparation for its opening in the autumn.

“A fresh coat of paint on the crest is symbolic of the effort and time spent on the renewal of this grand house, which carries so much of our city’s civic history.”

The Opening Doors Restoration project for York Mansion House, the biggest investment since 1732, aims to improve the visitor experience by beautifully restoring the gem of York’s architectural history, allowing more people to enjoy it.

The crest comprises the cross of St George and the lions dating back to the Middle Ages. The sword and mace and cap of maintenance were added later.
