SOUNDS from years gone by thundered over Elvington at the weekend, as vintage aircraft took to the skies.

The Press Camera Club member Andrew Woodcock captured these images of a Lancaster bomber as it flew over Elvington and Wheldrake on Sunday.

The aircraft - from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flypast - took to the skies as part of the Yorkshire Air Museum’s Vintage Props Family Day.

A celebration of the start of the summer holidays, the day saw crowds of families head to the museum to enjoy a birds of prey display, live music harmony group The Alka Seltzer Sisters, and a wartime dance group, as well as the vintage propellor aircraft on site.

The school holiday events continue this weekend with a Golden Era Vintage Motorcycle Run on Sunday, July 30.

The annual nostalgic gathering of pre 1931 vintage motorcycles will start with a motorcycle ride around the Yorkshire Wolds before the bikes head back to the Museum at Elvington for afternoon tea.

Aircraft engineers will also be performing propeller aircraft engine runs, giving visitors chance to enjoy some vintage piston engines of all ages. Normal Museum admission charges apply.

Later in the summer, the air museum will mark Women’s Services Day on Sunday, August 13; Pioneers of Aviation Day on Sunday, August 20; and Rolling Thunder Day on Sunday, August 27. More information about the Yorkshire Air Museum events is available online at www.yorkshireairmuseum.org/events.
