A MAN from York who was abusive towards a taxi driver after punching a man in the street and who later kicked a door and shutters at the M&S Jorvick BP station in Lawrence Street, has appeared before city magistrates.

Joshua Strickland, 22, of Lucas Avenue in Clifton had earlier pleaded guilty to five offences: two of using threatening behaviour, assault, intent to cause harassment to the taxi driver and criminal damage.

Strickland hit the headlines when he was last August jailed for six months after his drunken and abusive behaviour to crew and passengers during a Jet2.com flight led to the plane from Cyprus being diverted.

He was also in the news when he failed a 'love rat' lie detector test on ITV's the Jeremy Kyle Show in 2015.

Prosecutor Adam Walker told York Magistrates' Court on Thursday that on April 23 this year Strickland had been picked up in the street by driver Joynul Al-Ameen of Streamline Taxis. Strickland had been fighting with some other men in King's Square, assaulted an unknown person and punched another man.

"CCTV footage provided also showed that he was wanting to fight everyone in Swinegate," Mr Walker said.

"He was using threatening words on the way back home in the taxi, which stopped at the M&S petrol station. Staff tried to bring down the roller shutters after they wouldn't sell his girlfriend some beer.

"He stopped the shutters coming down, kicking the door. He was further abusive when he got home."

Strickland's solicitor Adam Henry said his client had a number of mental health problems.

He added that Strickland had been released from custody after his conviction for the abusive behaviour on the plane and that there were no other supervision orders in place.

Magistrates adjourned sentencing until August 11 to allow time for a probation report.

He was bailed on condition that he does not use Streamline Taxis, enter unlicensed premises within the York ringroad bounded by the A64 and A1237, enter M&S in Lawrence Street and contact or approach Joynul Al-Ameen.

Strickland was due to be tried by magistrates for alleged offences of using threatening, abusive, insulting words and behaviour at M&S in Lawrence Street with intent to cause Joynul Al-Ameen alarm or distress, of racially or religiously aggravated harassment, alarm or distress.and making off without payment for a taxi journey with intent to avoid payment of £15.

These three charges and the case were dismissed by magistrates after Joynul Al-Ameen failed to appear as a witness and prosecutor Mr Walker offered no evidence.
