STUDENTS at a York school are enjoying a new £12,000 play park, which creative pupils helped design.

York High's technology department embarked on a challenge to design a play park for the school, in Cornlands Road.

Pupils worked with Elvington-based company Playscheme of Elvington to create an area that would improve fitness, fun and wellbeing for all involved. Their ideas and collaborative working led them towards an outdoor adventure trail based on the Parkour concept of free running.

Playscheme brought the pupils' ideas to life through Computer Aided Design with the final trail consisting of a range of vaults, jump boxes, wall jumps, ramps, agility course and a trampoline.

The pupils, now in Year 10, were delighted to hear that a bid to Awards for All for £10,000 had been successful, meaning their ideas could become a reality. A non-uniform day raised £632 for the project, Bulloughs Cleaning Services donated £500 and the remaining costs were covered by school funds.

A spokesman for the school said: "Some of the equipment is specifically designed to be used by wheelchair users who attend the school as well as other students with a range of physical disabilities.

"The exciting equipment will accommodate young people regardless of their level of physical skills and will help to develop balance, coordination, agility and spatial awareness as well as improving confidence and self-esteem and develop life skills including team working and leadership.

"The project has inspired future projects in the technology department at York High School with pupils further enhancing their creativity and computer Aided Design skills."

The facility has recently been installed.
