85 years ago

Thousands of people lined the streets from Wellington Barracks, awaiting the burial of Field-Marshal Viscount Plumer, in the Warriors’ Chapel of Westminster Abbey.

Simultaneously with the funeral a short impressive memorial service was held in the Choir of York Minster.

Lord Plumer, General Officer Commanding-in-Chief the Northern Command, from 1911 until 1914 had received the freedom of the city for his part during the war.

His popularity while in York was exemplified in the large congregation.

Although rain threatened and slight showers fell at times during the day, the weather was fine on the whole and the attendance was satisfactory for the Malton Show.

The Fitzwilliam tradition of 60 years was being worthily upheld as Lord Milton took his position as the show’s Youthful President.

50 years ago

York could have been sitting on the edge of a coalfield, according to National Coal Board geologists.

Drilling tests down to 3,600ft had already proved that Selby was sitting on one, and another rig at present drilling at Kelfield, near York, could soon prove that the edge of the Yorkshire coalfield reached much further north.

Youngsters of Haxby Road Junior School, had raised a total £58 for the Minster Appeal Fund.

Held over a fortnight and restricted to the pupils, each class organised its own events, each making a profit of approximately £8.

A swimming pool measuring 41ft by 25ft had been ordered for Tadcaster County Junior School, after the swimming pool committee had so far raised £1,080 towards the costs.

The star of EastEnders and Carry On Films blamed her financial difficulties on the pub in Amersham, Bucks, she established after she wed Malton man Stephen Hollings.

Parents had a final chance to have their say on the way the new Park Grove School would look after been invited to closing consultations at the College of Ripon and York St John to discuss the options being considered by council chiefs.

City of York Council had already ruled out restoring the Victorian school to the way it was before the fire ripped through it earlier that year.

Instead, they were keen to see a new-style school for the 21st century.
