PETER RICKABY suggests that for the EU to require the UK to pay “a divorce bill” for leaving the EU is equivalent to someone who has resigned from a golf club receiving a letter demanding money to pay for the continued upkeep of the greens (Letters, July 17).

This is misleading. A better analogy would be for the departing member to receive a polite request suggesting that, before leaving, he should settle his outstanding bar bill.

Surely only a cad would consider resigning from a club without first paying for his drinks.
