THE River Art Market has come back to the banks of the Ouse for 2017.

Designers and artists from York and beyond took up residence on Dame Judi Dench Walk on Saturday. As the weather improved and the number of passers-by and art lovers grew, organisers said the market gave the riverside spot a new identity.

Charlotte Dawson, who began staging the market in 2016, said: “We had a lot of people strolling along the river from Marygate car park. As the footfall increased because of the market, that made it a place of its own rather than just a walkway.”

The artists greeted tourists as well as York locals who supported the venture.

Charlotte added: “The local support has been amazing - people offering to put posters up and in shops and spread the word.”

The River Art Market will run for eight Saturdays through the summer until September 2, and will be open from 10am to 6pm on Dame Judi Dench Walk, below the Museum Gardens and the Star Inn the City. There will be new artists there each week.
