THREE York fires crews fought a blaze in a field on the edge of the city this evening.
Firefighters from three stations - York, Acomb and Huntington - were all called to the large fire in a stubble field near the junction of Foxwood Lane and Askham Lane at about 7pm on Sunday.
The flames spread over a patch of the land around 30 x 40 metres, and firefighters were worried the blaze seemed to be heading towards nearby houses.
The fire was extinguished using beaters and water backpacks, and the fire crews have now left the scene.
The flames are thought to have been started deliberately, a fire service spokesman said, and details have been passed to the police.
