YORK Minster’s summer season of organ recitals will include three featuring music by the cathedral’s distinguished organist emeritus, Dr Francis Jackson, who celebrates his 100th birthday in October.
The five recitals will allow visitors to hear some of the country’s most talented organists play in the surroundings of the cathedral’s stunning quire.
They will take place over five Saturday evenings from July 29 until August 26.
The Minster’s current team of organists will be joined by organist emeritus John Scott Whiteley, and by Dr James Lancelot who retires after 32 years as organist of Durham Cathedral this summer.
Director of music Robert Sharpe said they provided a unique opportunity to experience the organ when the building was quiet.
“Listeners can enjoy the atmospheric surroundings and the magnificent sound of the instrument being used to its full potential by acclaimed musicians,” he added.
