HOTEL Indigo in York celebrated its second birthday by unveiling a wall mural created by York College Art and Design student, David Law.

David, 19, designed the mural, entitled Sweet York, to incorporate the local neighbourhood story, in particular celebrating Walmgate’s chocolate heritage.

David comments, “I came up with the design through researching the history of York and the various factories, such as Terry’s. I also made several trips around the city on foot to gather inspiration and take pictures of elements I wanted to incorporate into the mural."

“I really enjoyed designing the mural for Hotel Indigo York. The hotel has a very quirky and unique feel to it, so it meant I could have a lot of fun and get really creative with my design.”

Mike Sweeting, general manager at Hotel Indigo York said: “The standard of David’s work is truly exceptional and we are all thrilled with the mural. It is a fantastic tribute to the area’s rich history and is the perfect way to celebrate our second successful award-winning year of business.”

The mural, made using spray paint, acrylic paint and marker pens, took almost a month to complete and now holds pride of place in the hotel gym. As part of his college course, David was required to incorporate a legendary York resident into his work, the notorious Guy Fawkes.

Hotel Indigo York works with York College, helping to create opportunities for work experience and to inspire the next generation of hospitality professionals.
