A RED carpet was rolled out for early years children from two reception classes who wore mortar boards and gowns for their very own graduation from their first year at school.

Fifty pupils from the two reception classes at Clifton Green Primary School celebrated a brilliant year and looked forward to Year 1 by being welcomed by staff.

The school's community liaison, John Hattam, said: "We wanted to stage something to reward the children as they have all done brilliantly and achieved a lot in reception.

"We didn't see why graduations should be confined to degree graduates.

"It was a celebration of what they have been doing and a look back at what they have learned.

"One boy remarked that he had learned how to make pizza and another that he could count to 100.

"They all walked down the red carpet wearing home-made hats and they were presented with a certificate and scroll.

"There was music and singing and they officially 'came of age' from reception.

"The parents were applauded to for their part in the children's achievements, as were their reception class teachers, Penny Vity and George Brichieri."

The teachers put together a video that showcased the highlights of the year.

And the children and the opportunity to spend some time with Year 1 teachers who welcomed them to the classrooms.
