Have your say on homes plan for old Lowfield School site

The site, to be known as Lowfield Green, could be turned into family homes and flats and bungalows for people over 55.

Members of the public can view plans on Tuesday, from 4.30pm to 7pm at the Gateway Centre, on Front Street, before a planning application is submitted to City of York Council.

People will be able to view and discuss the plans with officers and learn more about changes to them since the last event.

The development will also include York’s first self-build housing plots, a health hub and public open space for all ages.

Teachers and pupils moved out of the Lowfield site after it closed down in December 2008 and the redevelopment is part of the wider older people’s accommodation overhaul, as is the similar plan for the Burnholme school site in Tang Hall.

Councillor Sam Lisle, executive member for housing and safer neighbourhoods, said: “We need new homes in York and the Lowfield Green site gives us the opportunity to demonstrate what a good quality, mixed use development can look like.

“Homes for families and bungalows for the elderly are particularly welcome, as is a new care home. All of this sits in good quality public open spaces with roads designed to prevent ‘cutting through’ and a good provision of parking to minimise over-spill into surrounding streets. Do come along and see what’s being proposed and take the chance to comment.”

Cllr Carol Runciman, executive member for adult social care and health, added: “The plans for the Lowfield Green site form a key element of the council’s Older Person’s Accommodation Programme which aims to provide modern, high quality care facilities alongside supporting people to maintain their independence.

“I urge residents to take a look at the plans for the care scheme and bungalows for older residents and have their say in order to shape our proposals going forward.”

The plans will also be at Explore Acomb Learning Library Centre until Friday, July 28 or at www.york.gov.uk/consultations.
