85 years ago

An estimated £500 worth of damage was caused after a fire broke out in the machinery sheds at Seamer Lime Works, Scarborough.

A large shed was burned to the ground and 2,000 sacks destroyed.

Workmen in the quarries saw the fire, but the shed was quickly a mass of flames, taking three hours before the blaze was extinguished.

Mistress Pepys a regular contributor to the “Yorkshire Herald” wrote about what to do with the remains of a macaroni cheese, which she had found in her larder.

“Chopping up the cold macaroni and piling it in to a shallow bowl surrounded by a green salad, with a dressing of salt, pepper, oil, and vinegar and a dust of white sugar, provides an attractive salad to the eye.”

The people of Thorpe Willoughby, near Selby, had won their fight for a second postbox in the village, after claiming there was a danger to children and old people who had to cross the busy Leeds Road to post a letter.

Rolling Stone Keith Richards was given permission by Lord Parker, the Lord Chief Justice, to go abroad while he was on bail pending his appeal against conviction on a drug charge.

The Transport and General Workers’ Union voted in Blackpool to get tough with MPs sponsored by union funds.

The union wanted tighter checks to stop them voting against the union’s interest in Parliament.

A green bri-nylon dress worth £6 16s 6d had been stolen between 12.30pm and 4pm from a display fixture in the store of W Rowntree and Son Ltd, Coney Street, York.

There was a second tornado shock for the sleepy village of Thorpe Willoughby, after a twister was spotted at 8.30pm.

It was the second sighting in the region in only nine days after a tornado had struck at Rudston near Bridlington and was snapped by a freelance photographer appearing in the Evening Press the next day.

The Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington was alive once more with the thunder of engines as 300 machines from across Britain arrived for the York Classic Motorcycle Rally.

Organised by the museum in association with York and District British Motorcycle Club, the event had grown annually since 100 enthusiasts first took part in 1992.
