THE couple who were killed while crossing the A64 in North Yorkshire last month have been named by police.

They are Charles McLaughlin, 53, and Judith McLaughlin, 58, from Welburn, near Malton.

They were killed at about 10.55pm on Friday 23, said a spokesman for North Yorkshire Police.

He said it was believed they were crossing the road from north to south at a bus stop - near the junction to Welburn - when the collision occurred with a white Vauxhall Mokka which was travelling east towards Scarborough. They were pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The incident led to the closure of the A64 in both directions until 3.35am on Saturday June 24 to allow a full investigation of the scene.

He said the driver of the Mokka, a man aged in his 50s from the Wakefield area, and his wife in the passenger seat, were uninjured but suffered from shock following the collision.

"Police inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident," said a spokesman.

"Witnesses or anyone who recalls seeing the man and woman or the white Vauxhall Mokka prior to the incident, are urged to contact North Yorkshire Police on 101, select option 2, and ask for Gemma."
