PUPILS from Copmanthorpe School have been getting in touch with their Tudor heritage at St Giles' Church by meeting minstrel and storyteller Peter Bull and two medieval characters.

The event was part of York Archaeological Trust's the Church Explorers! summer-long festival, which has events in churches across the region.

“Our churches are like giant storybooks, made in stone, and full of amazing stories to tell," said Dr Chris Tuckley, the trust's head of interpretation.

"If they were manuscripts, they’d be under lock and key in national museums, the envy of the world, and yet we pass by them every day in our neighbourhoods, unaware of their secrets and their importance."

The Trust's JORVIK Group of Attractions organises the annual Church Explorers! in partnership with the Diocese of York, and Churches Conservation Trust. The next event is in St Olave's Church on July 15.
