THOUSANDS of people took advantage of the warm weather and turned out for a fun-packed carnival in Haxby.

Held at the Ethel Ward Playing Field on Saturday, the Haxby Carnival attracted about 2,500 people.

It featured live music, a climbing wall, birds of prey, go-karts, stalls, fair and a fancy dress competition.

There was also food, refreshments and a licensed bar.

The bands KAYA, Generation Groove and The Community Chorus entertained visitors, as did the Joseph Rowntree Vaudeville Players and The Magic Hatter.

Before the official opening, there was a procession with the carnival queen, Hollie Mordue, and her two attendants, Phoebe Mae Shires and Nancy Mae Mooney, from the village green to the field.

Miss York GB 2017, Hannah King, opened the carnival.

Meanwhile, a tombola was held, which raised more than £430, which will be donated to local groups and a selected local branch of a charity.

Haxby Town Council deputy clerk Jenny Bell, who helped organise the carnival, said: “It was absolutely wonderful and extremely well attended.

“It just went so well.”
