FAMILIES came out in their droves for a fun packed day at Copmanthorpe Carnival.

A variety of activities, events and performances for all tastes took place under blue skies as the village celebrated summer in style.

Superheroes was this year’s theme for the popular annual event at Copmanthorpe Recreation Centre, which was sponsored by Quantum Estate Agency.

This year’s carnival involved Towton Battlefield Society’s Frei Company, who  instructed youngsters in sword drill and demonstrated how armour was worn and weapons were used in battle.

Other attractions included traditional games like bat the rat, a coconut shy and skittle alley, fairground, giant inflatables, climbing wall, bungee trampoline, farmers market, Pimms tent, donkey rides and Yorkshire’s favourite food stalls.

In the new arena there was an old school children’s sports including egg and spoon and sack races.

There was also several bars and a huge range of stalls.

The leading music acts on the main stage were Sister Madly, Skitsch, Adam Dawson, Lion Papers, Minster Conspiracy and Leather’o.

Organisers also staged a free silent disco for music lovers with different tastes.

The event involves festival-goers putting on headphones and listening to music of their own choosing.

Martin Pickard, chairman of Copmanthorpe Carnival committee, said: “It’s been pretty fantastic.

“The sun is here and the families have come pouring in.

“We are on track to beat our target of 3,000 paying adults.

“The favourite thing for everyone is the weather and a lot of people ahve come up to me and said what a nice family event this is.

“We’ve got the silent disco for the teenagers and for young kids we have inflatables and the fairground.

“We have big rides this year as well as the smaller rides for young ones, and have put on donkey rides and the arena for children’s sports.

“The battlefield society had great fun beating each other up and it has been very exciting!”
