FIVE people were taken to hospital after a serious crash in North Yorkshire.

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said two cars collided on the A59 near Allerton Park at about 5pm yesterday. It happened at the junction with Hopperton.

A man was released from one of the cars by fire crews using hydraulic cutting equipment.

He was taken to hospital with chest injuries.

Another man was taken to hospital with a suspected broken leg and two women were treated for chest pains and a cut arm.

Four ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and an air ambulance were sent to the scene, a spokeswoman for Yorkshire Ambulance Service said.

She added that one person was airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary, two to the same hospital by road ambulance and two other patients were taken by road ambulance to Harrogate District Hospital.
