RESIDENTS from a York care home enjoyed a trip to a nature reserve on the East Yorkshire coast for a spot of bird watching.

Five residents of Amelia House, in Coningham Avenue, Rawcliffe, spent a morning at RSPB Bempton Cliffs, and were thrilled to spot a puffin.

The RSPB has invested heavily, with the support of funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, to make the cliff top site accessible to those who are less mobile.

Activities co-ordinator Jenny Rayner made an initial recce to the site and was impressed by the ease of access for wheelchair users.

Maria Prchlik, communications officer at the RSPB nature reserve, said: "Every day on the cliff tops is special but a visit from Harry, Nancy, Clive and the other residents of Amelia House made it doubly so.

"It was a joy to be able to share the seabird spectacle with them. We’re delighted that the improvements we’ve made to our paths and viewpoints meant they could join us for a few hours. It makes all the hard work worthwhile."

The residents’ day was rounded off with a short drive into Bridlington for a fish and chip lunch.
