ARTIST and curator Charlotte Dawson is bringing York River Art Market back to the bank of the Ouse near Lendal Bridge this month.

Talented designers and artists will hang original work from the railings along Dame Judi Dench Walk, below the Museum Gardens and the Star Inn the City, for eight Saturdays between July 15 and September 2.

“When we launched the art market last year people loved the relaxed atmosphere in a beautiful place, an oasis away from the bustle of Saturday in York,” Charlotte said.

“I’ve been inspired by the fantastic Bayswater Art Market in London, that has been running for 60 years and knew that Yorkshire has an amazing wealth of talent that should be showcased.

“There will be 30 different emerging and established artists at the market each Saturday, with original art and design ranging from cards to jewellery.

“It’s a lovely way to spend a Saturday and browse as you stroll in a beautiful place. There will be something for everyone.

“And the market is interesting for local people who can find some of their favourite artists, whose work they collect.

“It is also a bonus for tourists and visitors and an opportunity for galleries to spot new talent and for emerging artists to exhibit.”

The market has attracted artists from across all corners of York and Yorkshire, as well as London, to take pitches

They include designer and teacher Emma Walsh, Beverley-based Martin Jones and Nick Boruk who designed for Fred Perry adverts.

Charlotte is an artist with a wealth of experience in setting up community art projects. Last year’s market was held for three Sundays and this year expands to eight Saturdays.

“People loved it, the atmosphere, the excitement of buying art direct from the artists and seeing live demonstrations too.

“I want this to become part of York’s cultural identity,” Charlotte added.

“People will travel here to enjoy art if they know it is an annual fixture.”

Charlotte, from the Bishopthorpe Road area of the city, studied at Leeds College of Art.

The first market will open on Saturday, July 15 between 10am and 6pm, followed by the next seven Saturdays until September 2.
