WHY is the A64 a jam that’s not managing?
The weekend is upon us and you might be thinking of a car journey to the beautiful East Coast to visit Whitby, Scarborough, Bridlington or Filey? Memories of childhood climbing Whitwell Hill and stopping at the top to allow the boiling radiator to cool down...
Back to reality today. Why has this A64 route become a nightmare?
What a pain in the A64 it is - and other ‘A’ roads from York.
Why, in my lifetime, isn’t it now dual carriageway to all these seaside towns? The A64 from Tadcaster started in 1934.
There are five million of us in Yorkshire - the same as Scotland - and our East Coast needs a dual or motorway for it’s economic development.
We pay up to £2,000 for our annual car tax (VED) plus 70 per cent tax on fuel - just to sit in a road jam.
If the A64 traffic is - amazingly - moving, you might stand a chance of getting your feet wet, but forget it if there’s an accident - you’ll be stuck for hours.
What’s happened to our helpful road traffic police who would get the road moving as well as dealing with the problem?
There’s no shortage of police resources as they sit in their detector van - like a North Sea trawler - casting their nets over the A64 bridges counting the money rolling in.
Surely I’m not getting cynical about driving in my old age?
