A TEENAGER from York who was a carer for her late mum who had motor neurone disease will be a special guest at a local fundraiser.

Megan Harris, 15, has been invited to present prizes to the winners of a fishing match at the Pool Bridge Farm Family Fun Day, in Crockey Hill, near York.

The event, taking place today, from 9.30am to 4.30pm, is in aid of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

What started off as a fishing match to raise funds for local people with motor neurone disease has expanded into a fun day, with free angling tuition, fly casting lessons, pond dipping, nature walks, a falconry display and a chance to sit in a bird hide watching wild kestrels.

Last Saturday, The Press reported that Megan had received a string of Community Pride Award nominations, in the Spirit of Youth category, for looking after her mum Janine for nearly two years before she died, aged 49, on March 22, after a suspected heart attack.

All Saints’ RC School pupil Megan, of Lotherington Mews, Derwenthorpe, said she was “excited” about attending the event and presenting prizes.

The MNDA “means a lot” to her family, she added, after it provided equipment to help her mum.

The event, at Pool Bridge Farm, is being organised by the family of Anne Walker, who died in July last year after suffering from motor neurone disease. The fishing match will be held in her memory.

Anne’s husband Graham, of Newton-on-Derwent, East Yorkshire, said: “The proceeds of this fundraising event are 100per cent earmarked for local sufferers to enable them to buy a stairlift, a mobility scooter or to pay that extra insurance needed to go on a bucket list holiday.”

He added: “I saw the story about Megan in The Press and I can really relate to what she did because I did that.

“How on earth a young girl did that I do not know.”

Entry to the fun day is free.
