DEVELOPERS planning to build a new house on a Victorian street have scrapped their proposals.

Campaigners had warned that one of York’s finest Victorian streets could be ruined, if Trinity Services UK had its plans to build a new family home in the middle of a row of 19th-century houses on Howard Street approved.

Neighbours objected en masse, and the plans have now been withdrawn.

Nick Pears, who lives next door, said: “I am delighted that the proposal for a new build between numbers four and six has been withdrawn. We hope and expect this will mean that the original street plan and architectural authenticity of the street will now be retained for future generations to enjoy.”

The Howard Street plot backs on to 79 Fulford Road, where a plan to demolish the single storey buildings fronted by the old Theatre Royal stone arches still stands.

The city council has until July 28 to decide whether the buildings can be torn down.
