MORE work is needed to reduce deaths from smoking, ten years after the introduction of the smokefree workplaces, a senior North Yorkshire county councillor has said.

Marking the 10th anniversary on Saturday of the Health Act, Cllr Caroline Dickinson, executive member for public health, said only 13 per cent of North Yorkshire residents now smoke.

But smoking was still the leading cause of preventable premature death and there was much to be done to achieve the council’s aim of a smokefree generation by 2025.
