Labradors and gun dogs had been reported as outstanding at the Northallerton and District Canine Society members’ sanction show, with some of the other exhibits labelled as merely average.

Sixty patients at Middleton Hall, private mental hospital near Darlington, had to be hurriedly conducted from the building after fire had broken out on the roof.

On arrival the Darlington fire brigade, had difficulty in obtaining an adequate supply of water, as the hydrant in the grounds of the hall could not yield sufficient pressure.

Cairo’s International Airport had been closed “until further notice” amid considerable activity of Egyptian jet fighter planes over the outskirts of the capital.

According to Reuters the closure had become effective after a high level delegation arrived from Czechoslovakia, giving no explanation why the closure had been enforced.

More than 12,000 York employees in the cocoa, chocolate and confectionary industry were to receive a five per cent pay rise.

A national agreement from the industry meant a rise of 10 shilling a week for men, and 8 shilling a week for women.

Two new North Riding schools, had been officially opened over the weekend.

Osbaldwick County Primary was opened by Mrs Oldman, whose late husband was the chief education officer of York, and Rawcliffe County Primary by Councillor Lord Masham.

The sale of 79 dresses worn by Princess Diana raised more than £2 million for charities at an auction in New York.

The dresses that the Princess wore during her 15-year-marriage to Prince Charles were eagerly snapped up by a crowd of 1,100 people at Christie’s.

The Evening Press Cancer Care Haven Appeal announced that its figure had been boosted to the tune of £1,000, thanks to the efforts of businesses and organisations in York.

And Pickering Station on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway was in line for a £900,000 revamp thanks to cash from the National Lottery.
